Description

This well-managed farm is located in the Eston-Plato area. It consists of Regina and Sceptre heavy clays. Soils are primarily Class C with a final soil rating average of 70.3. The unit is well blocked with large fields which enhance efficiency of operations. Recent upgrades to grain capacity include hopper bins with aeration. There are two yards which are serviced with natural gas and power, and the main yard has upgraded 400 amp power. There is a shop and equipment storage. Four dugouts provide ample water for spray operations. A spring in main yard has been used as water supply for livestock. The main yard will be connected to Rural 44 Pipeline upon completion.

The land is well managed and has followed a rotation of cereals, pulses and oilseeds, under the direction of a Professional Agrologist. Five year production, soil tests and chemical records are available upon request.

Working with their agronomist, practices and testing utilized by Carter Cattle Company Ltd. include the following:

Yearly soil testing completed at sampling depths of 0-6”/6-12”

• Shallow samples completed to identify and analyze micronutrient levels.
• Deep samples completed to identify sufficient levels of leachable nutrients, Nitrogen and Sulphur.
• Soil sample locations are GPS’d for accurate comparison year over year.
• Adjusting to nutrient specific fertilizers yearly to maintain, build and/or correct identified macro and micro nutrients.
• Organic matter levels averaged 3.5ppm across the operation which indicates their positive attention to crop and stubble management. Owned land has values up to 4.1 and 6.1ppm organic matter. These rates are above average for a lot the brown soils zones.

Comprehensive fertilizer planning and comparisons

• Based on soil test results and goals to maintain and build soil residual nutrient levels, fertilizer plans were made to match these needs.
• Foliar micronutrient was added to herbicide and fungicide applications to provide additional N, P, K and micronutrients to the crop.

Rotation management planning based on soil test results

• Analysis of available nutrients in the soil and nutrient requirements of each commodity grown on the farm. Rotations were well maintained and adjusted where necessary.

Use of Climate FieldView and CropMatrix Data Management Platform

• Use of digital platform and integrations for documenting field scouting, tracking fungicide trials and effectively analyze results to make informed decisions for the following year.

Planning Meeting for trial plans with agrologist

• Meetings through the year to discuss area trials and what can be incorporated into the operation to improve yield potential on the farm. Trial plans were made and always taken to yield.

All fungicide spraying was completed at 20 gallons of water

• High water volumes maximized coverage and performance of product to minimize disease spores on crop resides helping manage inoculum levels.

Reviewed completion of soil health reports to assess biological activity and mineralizable nitrification on 4 fields.

Negative Aphanomyces test on pea crop in 2018 on field SE 18-25-18-W3. Completed as a pilot trial for new biological control for Aphanomyces disease. Testing was completed on soil to determine presence of the pathogen. Test results came back showing no Aphanomyces pathogen present demonstrating the benefits of extended crop rotations for disease management used on this farm.
